VIDEO: INTERVIEW – Nessa Barrett Talks Liberation Making ‘Aftercare’, Shares Aspirations In Next Five Years

Alt-pop artist Nessa Barrett just concluded the first run of tour dates in support of her latest album ‘AFTERCARE’ that included North American cities, appearances at Lollapalooza in Argentina and Brazil as well as Estéreo Picnic in Bogota, Colombia. The string of live performances coincided with the release of the deluxe edition of ‘AFTERCARE’, which features six new tracks—including recent singles “LOVE LOOKS PRETTY ON YOU” and “DOES GOD CRY?”. “I want this album to empower women and whomever needs it, to feel confident and comfortable with themselves and sex,” Barrett stated. “Sex is something that has always been taboo and uncomfortable for me, but making this album healed that and I hope it does the same for the listener.” Songs like “DIRTY LITTLE SECRET” capture a liberation and confidence that Barrett has grown into as of late.“‘DIRTY LITTLE SECRET” is one of my favorite moments on the album because it represents an empowered woman knowing her worth and putting a man in his place,” Barrett says of the track. “It doesn’t always have to be about love, sometimes you just want to own your femininity. I hope this song empowers other women to feel confident, sexy, and hot!” With the release of ‘AFTERCARE’, Barrett’s tendencies to favor darker sonic palettes is on display and songs like “Edward Scissorhands” draw inspiration from films by Tim Burton and John Waters. Barrett’s music has intrinsically always been about empowering people who feel isolated. “When I put everything on paper and write how I’m feeling and form it into lyrics and make something that’s so negative and painful for me in my head into a creative song that’s now something beautiful, it’s very therapeutic,” she shared.

Nessa Barrett spoke with B-Sides host Pete Mar during a recent tour stop supporting her latest album ‘Aftercare’! She speaks about the liberation she felt in making the album, how specific songs make her feel, where she sees herself in five years both personally and professionally and more.
