ACL festival // Instagram

Austin City Limits kicks of this Friday, and the city is more than excited for all the fun.  Zilker Park will be flooded with tens of thousands of people for two weekends full of great music. While seeing the major acts like Muse and The Cure is expected, it’s always fun to explore some new sound. Check out these 10 artists below and see what appeals to your ear buds.

1. Purity Ring–  Canadian electronic duo Corin Roddick and Megan James released their debut album, Shrine, this year. Filled with ghostly vocals and trembling synths, the chilly electro-pop tracks are unique and catchy.

2. The Black Angels– Psychedelic rock takes human form in the Austin-based quartet. As leaders in the psych scene, the Black Angels have taken it upon themselves to expand the genre into an experience the entire world can become a part of.

3. Cherub–  Get on your dancing shoes for this band who’s performing only one weekend of ACL. The electro-pop duo have been described as the dance love-child of 80’s funk and pop-music from the future, and their live performances are vibrant and pulsating with good energy.

4. Wick-it the Instigator– Having caught attention in the Southeast and across the nation, the DJ’s tracks are serious crowd pleasers that give high-energy entertainment. His deep roots in hip-hop are prevalent in his music, but there’s never a shortage of heavy electronic bass.

5. Local Natives– With a sound described as psych folk, the indie rock band released their sophomore album, Hummingbird, in January this year and reached #12 on the Billboard Top 200. Their music has received a lot of positive feedback and described as a band that knows how to groove.

6. Portugal. The Man– With a devoted fan base and six full-length albums, the talented indie rock band have proven themselves to be something worth listening to. Having collaborated with five-time Grammy Award-winning producer Danger Mouse, their latest album was released this summer and has made a name for itself.

7. Toro Y Moi– Chaz Bundwick is the soul man behind Toro Y Moi, a sound that sets itself on top of the chillwave movement. Pushing musical boundaries, his tracks are tasteful and the type of music you can chill out to.

8. Fun.- Best known for their Grammy Award-winning song, We Are Young, the band lives up to their name. The indie-pop group has had three hit singles rise to the top of the charts and reach platinum status. Since their formation in 2008,their music has continually proven to be liked by anyone who listens.

9. Bright Light Social Hour- As natives to Austin, Bright Light Social Hour is the definition of what people expect from American rock in the Live Music Capitol of the World. Having combined the sounds of psychedelic blues, deep soul, and southern rock, the critically acclaimed group won awards for their talent at SXSW back in 2011, including Band of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year.

10. Grimes– Described in a recent New York Times review as “one of the most impressive albums of the year,” 25-year-old Claire Broucher is an artistic music, and her experimental music filled with looping and layering of her airy vocals is not a sound that’s easily defined.
