After much built-up anticipation, Sofía Valdés released her self-titled debut album in October. The release comes after lead single “How’s That Working Out?”, an upbeat collaboration with Cuco, which is one of a handful for the Panamanian singer-songwriter. The project also features songs like “Tacones Por La Puerta” which features the cinematic strings from acclaimed Brazilian composer Arthur Verocai, as well as DannyLux on “Lento”. The self-titled release is Valdés’ is a mix of new music as well as tracks from last year’s EP, ‘Silvia’, including “Easy”, “Midnight Freak-Out”, “Wild”, “Silvia” and “Barbed Wire”.
Born and bred in Panama, Valdés was born into music as her great-grandfather was the legendary Cuban musician Miguelito Valdés, and her great-great grandmother was Silvia De Grasse, a Panamanian singer who once performed with Louis Armstrong. After learning to play guitar at the age of eight and writing her first song at 13, Valdés honed her musical knowledge at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan at 15 and later on the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts at 18.
Sofía Valdés speaks with B-Sides host Pete Mar about what she’s learned about herself the past few years living on her own in Los Angeles, setting boundaries, how the experiences influenced the music on her self-titled debut album and more.
