One of the most exciting voices in music, flowerovlove, released her last EP, ‘ache in my tooth’ in October to much anticipation. It’s been a banner year for the 19-year-old artist from London as she made her Glastonbury debut, played numerous European festivals and also made her U.S. debut in New York City and Los Angeles in November. Born Joyce Cisse, flowerovlove initially garnered attention with her debut EP ‘Think Flower’ in 2020 and simultaneously began to make an imprint in fashion, having walked in Paris Fashion week as a model and becoming the face of brands like Gucci and Miason Kitsuné. Songs like “I Gotta I Gotta” and “All The Same” from her second EP ‘A Mosh Pit In The Clouds’ released in 2022 marked her first release with Capitol Records and showcases her knack for writing catchy melodies with heartfelt lyrics. Influenced by a wide range of artists from One Direction, Tame Impala and Bony M to ABBA and even music from African music from Ivory Coast, where her family is originally from. “I was raised as an African Child not as a British child although I was born and raised in London, so like I always feel a little bit from like African music I grew up around, I love Ivorian music a lot,” flowerovlove shared, “specific acoustic guitars and specific drum patterns which I love so much. I feel like the drum pattern in ‘a girl like me’ reminds me of ‘back a little bit’.” flowerovlove is already planning to release a new collection of songs and more shows in 2025.
U.K. artist flowerovlove spoke with B-Sides host Pete Mar ahead of her Los Angeles debut about her latest EP ‘ache in my tooth’, how her songwriting process starts with song titles, reflects on how her life experiences shape her lyrics, performing in the U.S. and more.
