The debut album, ‘With A Lightning Strike,’ by Genevieve Stokes dropped in October to much anticipation and critical acclaim. Many of songs are characterized by a darker, more intimate take on her creative search for childhood whimsy than her previous releases. Stokes shared, “‘With a Lightning Strike’ represents so many experiences and phases of my life, and it’s almost painfully personal at times. For the first time in my career, my sound and vision is entirely clear and true to me.” Stokes spent a period of time living in New Orleans, which greatly influenced those darker tones and inspired songs like “River”, which provided comfort to the Maine native, who was feeling disconnected at the time. Speaking about the track, Stokes noted, “I wanted to make something that felt comforting and recentering, making light of the emptiness I was experiencing. It started off as a chanty campfire song but became a lot swaggier when my co-producers and I added a beat.” Stokes just wrapped up her U.S. tour to celebrate the album release and has plans for more live performances in the upcoming year.
Genevieve Stokes spoke with B-Sides host Pete Mar about her debut album ‘With A Lightning Strike’, how her experience living in New Orleans influenced the music, encounters with ghosts and more.
