British-Brazilan singer-songwriter Liana Flores released her debut album this year to much critical acclaim. ‘Flower of the Soul’ is rooted in warm instrumentations touching upon Bossa Nova, British folk and pop. Standouts “cuckoo”, “I Wish For The Rain” and the “Nightvisions” capture a sense of innocence and wonder set against a variety of sounds.
Of the album title, Flores found inspiration from the album’s theme of transience, how flowers live in fleeting moments as does the songs on the project. There were some unexpected life moments that also spawned the idea, “I got a fortune cookie and it once said ‘imagination is the eye of the soul’ and I was like, that’s a crazy thing for fortune cookie to say!” Flores also noted the Kate Bush and William Wordsworth influence from the song “Moving” – “‘The Kick Inside’ by Kate Bush is one of my favorite albums and on the first track, there’s this bit where she goes, I’m not going to sing it but the lyric goes ‘you crush the lily in my soul'”.
