VIDEO: INTERVIEW – Lava La Rue at Portola 2024

Lava La Rue (they/them) dropped their debut album ‘STARFACE’, a genre-defining mix of psychedelic, electronic, R&B and rock while taking the listener on a journey on the self-described lesbian version of Ziggy Stardust. La Rue made their U.S. debut amidst a few tour dates opening for SG Lewis before making their Coachella debut last year. In many regards like Bowie, La Rue undertakes the visual aspects that accompany the music, drawing inspiration from films like Jackie Brown, Edgar Wright’s works, and the anime classic Akira.

During the Portola Music Festival 2024, La Rue sported a custom Oasis x Dumb and Dumber shirt, the artist addressed their album “Starface” and its reputation as “the lesbian Ziggy Stardust.” Discussing Bowie’s career, Lava La Rue (real name Ava Laurel) cited his ability to curate sounds from across genres – something she aims to do themselves.
