Luna Li just released her highly anticipated new album ‘When a Thought Grows Wings’ this past Friday, via In Real Life/AWAL. It’s the second studio album from the Canadian singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, who garnered much acclaim from her debut ‘Duality’ in 2022. Many of the songs on the album were born from her journey during a break-up with her partner of eight years, leaving her hometown of Toronto for Los Angeles, and found her world opening up in new ways.β― βWhen a Thought Grows Wings is about taking life into your own hands; allowing little thoughts and desires to bloom into real and tangible action.” Luna Li stated, “I was going through a period of big transitions in my life at the time of making this album, and in the process, I ended up connecting more deeply than ever with music, as well as with the incredible community of people around me.β While songs tackle the personal nature of her relationship, there are others which are broader as in “Minnie Says’, which is broader in the relationship with music. The song, a reference to Minnie Ripperton, is buoyant and inspired much of the record, “the song reads like a love song, but to me it’s actually a love song about music,” she explained, “it’s about that feeling when you find that one song that you’re just obsessed with and you want to be listening to it 24/7.” It was also the music of Ripperton along with harpist and musician Dorothy Ashby that served as the reference point of the album, along with The Cardigans, Weyes Blood and Melody’s Echo Chamber. Luna Li will be hitting the road this fall for a headlining North American Tour.
