Katie Pruitt released her highly anticipated sophomore album, ‘Mantras’, earlier this year to much anticipation and critical acclaim. The material on the album is centered around the idea of self-compassion and focusing inward for validation and building self-confidence. Pruitt shared, “I realized I had a problem with negative self-talk. So I started writing down phrases of encouragement and repeating mantras in the mirror. Through this practice I learned how to be a kinder friend to myself and ultimately a kinder friend to others. When life gets heavy and the future feel overwhelmingly out of our control, we can learn to turn inwards and build a home inside of ourselves.” The album serves as an extension of her debut album, ‘Expectations’, released in 2020 and documented her process of finding the confidence in identifying as queer, growing up in a religious community and its effects. The ideas for ‘Mantras’ started forming in 2021 for Pruitt, as she dealt with feelings of inferiority, “there’s a song called ‘Jealous Of The Boys’ that is a song I never thought I’d write,” she stated, “there’s females that are absolutely dominating right now, like Chappell Roan and Charlie XCX and there’s a movement right now,” Pruitt opined about the song as “my version of talking about that topic and I’m jealous of how easy it comes for a lot of dudes that I know and how much harder I feel I have to work for things.”
