VIDEO: INTERVIEW – DARUMAS at Outside Lands 2024

DARUMAS released their self-titled debut album in May that features the new collective putting Latin funk at the forefront. With upbeat and infectious songs like “Mango” and “Daruma,” the trio composed of multi-talented musicians Aldana Aguirre, Ceci Leon and Vedala Vilmond combine their various influences of funk, Latin pop, and disco into the music. “Daruma,” and the band’s name is inspired by the Japanese doll that is believed to be a good luck charm symbolizing perseverance and wish fulfillment. The band came together organically when Aguirre connected with Leon via a mutual musical colleague, “I heard the demos and I loved them and they’re really really funky and cool and I was like yeah and it was super easy,” shared Leon. Even though they come from different parts of the world, their common interests in music and personalties have meshed together well to create the vibe of DARUMAS- “Darumas is a band formed by three amazing girls,” Vilmond stated. “We are three musicians from different parts of the world” Aguirre shared, “…and three very different backgrounds” Leon stated, “that are all inspired by similar music, and trying to create something new with one another.”
