VIDEO: INTERVIEW – Mike Einziger of Incubus Talks Early Days Making ‘Morning View’, Upcoming Arena Tour

Incubus will be hitting the road on their 2024 arena tour in a couple of weeks, starting in Detroit and will be performing their iconic album ‘Morning View’ in its entirety followed by a myriad of fan favorites. ‘Morning View’ was originally released on October 23, 2001, and spawned numerous hit singles including “Wish You Were Here,” “Are You In?,” “Nice to Know You,” and “Warning” while going RIAA certified double Platinum and spent 60 weeks on the Billboard 200 peaking at number 2.

Inspired by a live recording of one of their recent shows, the band released ‘Morning View xxiii’, which features re-recordings of one of their most popular albums. “Roughly 23 years ago we rented a house at the sea to do an art experiment. The novel and expansive environment combined with a healthy dose of momentum helped us find that ever sought after FLOW state and the songs that became known as ‘Morning View’ have since become indelible and deeply important parts of our lives,” shared frontman Brandon Boyd. He stated, “this album helped propel our little art experiment called ‘Incubus’ into a way of life and here we are today, some 23 years later, about to introduce a new/next phase of it’s existence. ‘Morning View xxiii’ is a re-recording/re-think of the 2001 album and is the result of our desire to honor this burgeoning legacy but also reimagine it as musicians who have been lovingly performing these songs night after night for the last 23 years.” On the how the band approached making the album after their mainstream success of the album ‘Make Yourself’, guitarist Mike Einziger stated, “we spent a lot of time touring all over the world on ‘Make Yourself’ and then came back from that and had all this momentum and had just seen so much more of the world that by the time it came to write and record ‘Morning View’, we just had a much bigger perspective on music in general.”

When the band came up with the idea to re-record ‘Morning View’, however, there weren’t any demos for the band to reference, as Einziger noted that ‘Morning View’ was the first time they had related solely on a digital recording and much of the early ideas were recorded onto hard drives. He stated, “the hard drives that we needed were like these big glyph drives that weighed 80 pounds! They were huge and you had to pull this lunchbox thing out and it’s comical now looking back on it. For whatever reason in my mind at the time, we needed more memory space on those drives and I just erased them. All those demos, all the demo versions of the songs that we did that we recorded. I was just like a 20-year-old kid or 21 or whatever and didn’t even care. We lost all those demos except for a song called “Anything” that I think we released as a bonus track on our greatest hits album called ‘Monuments and Melodies’.”

Mike Einziger of Incubus spoke with B-Sides host Pete Mar about the band’s upcoming arena tour performing ‘Morning View’ in its entirety, their early days experiencing success and making the album, new music and more.
