Blame My Youth just dropped their new single and video for “Olé” this past Friday, carrying the momentum from their recent chart success of singles “The Break” and “Tokyo Rose”. The new song speaks to the avoidance of emotions caused by pain in a relationship, something the band’s founder and singer/songwriter Sean Van Vleet noted as the catalyst for making music with the band. “The summer of heartbreak for me was 2007, 2008, 2009,” Van Vleet shared how the experience gave him a wealth of material, “I’m going to dip into that whenever I need to and talk about those because I could still think back to when my heart was completely ripped out of my chest. I was living in Chicago, super broke, sleeping on a mattress, falling in love with music while someone’s breaking my heart.”
Van Vleet formed Blame My Youth in 2020 and immediately garnered attention with the new music as the first single “Right Where You Belong” was selected as the closing credits theme on the GRAMMY-nominated soundtrack of Bill & Ted Face the Music. Other songs like “Fantastic” has millions of streams and found success on the Rock radio charts, which enabled the band to tour throughout the US and UK, supporting artists like HARDY, The Offspring, 311, and AWOLNATION. This fall, they’ll be performing at the Louder Than Life Festival, along with a handful of headlining US dates.
Blame My Youth Founder Sean Van Vleet spoke with B-Sides host Pete Mar about his new project’s inspiration based on heartbreak, his journey to creating the band, past projects and more.
