REVIEW: The The Marías – Oakland, CA 07/17/2024

With two sold-out nights at the Fox Theater in Oakland, CA The Marías gave fans a memorable experience. Set against a moon-like portal as a backdrop, a bathtub and light tower, the stage was expansive and gave lead singer María Zardoya freedom to move around the stage performing fan favorites along with many new songs from their latest LP ‘Submarine’.

During the second night of shows, the setlist was similar to the first, opening with “Hamptons” and “Run Your Mouth” from ‘Submarine’. The latter elicited enthusiastic cheers and singalongs from the crowd as Zardoya strode back and forth to both sides of the stage. With plenty of anecdotes and interaction throughout the set, Zardoya mentioned how Billie Eilish had recently sung “Blur” on her Instagram story before starting the song. She also addressed her Spanish-speaking audience calling for those to cheer when asking if they were of descendants of Central American countries like Nicaragua, El Salvador or Puerto Rico or Mexico. The crowd was overwhelmingly interactive and cheered as the band went into “Ay No Puedo” and “Lejos de Ti”. Their medley of “Ruthless,” “Lovefool” (by The Cardigans) and “Care For You” was a major highlight for fans as Gabe Steiner on trumpet was prominently featured while fans danced, swayed and sang along. Their performance of “Otro atardecer,” a song which the band was a featured artist on the Bad Bunny track was true to the recorded version and a standout of the night. Changing outfits for the encore, Zardoya’s vocals were just as strong and smooth as it was from the start of the night as the band performed “Just a Feeling” and ended with the powerful “All I Really Want Is You”.
