After years as a celebrated and critically acclaimed classical artist, Gina Alice has moved into a new space with the release of her single “Slo-Mo.” The track features R&B vibes combined with breathy vocals, something totally new and exciting for the renowned pianist. “It started with me playing piano chords,” Gina Alice recalls. “I was vibing over the harmonies and finding the mood. It’s more of a sexy and vibey song. It’s about this feeling when you meet someone and connect. You really feel
the good moments, but they pass too fast, so you want them in ‘Slo-Mo’. When you hear it, I hope you feel
yourself and have fun in the moment.” Gina Alice has spent literally the majority of her life dedicated to her craft, growing up in Frankfurt, Germany as the daughter of German-Korean parents. She began playing piano at four-years-old and proceeded to carve out an incredible career in classical, having performed at Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Radio City Music Hall, Hollywood Bowl and numerous others worldwide. Gina Alice noted that after such success, it seemed like the right time to satiate her passion for pop and R&B music and create her own songs. “Songwriting was always my outlet where I could be myself,” she stated. “I always loved pop, R&B, jazz. They’re all very natural to me, because of the contrasts in my personality. I’m half-European and half-Asian. My background is similar to how I’m grounded in classical music, but my heart’s burning for pop music. It’s like having different personalities inside of you at the same time. They all make sense together, and that’s just who I am.” Now signed to Republic Records, Gina Alice plans to release more material that will culminate in an EP, later this year.
Gina Alice spoke with B-Sides host Pete Mar about the motivation for her new R&B project, the first release “Slo Mo”, some of her early non-classical influences and more.
