With all the surprise guests at the 2024 edition of Hangout Festival during Lana Del Rey’s set on Friday to the storms that passed through and amazing sets by Odesza, Chappell Roan, Renee Rapp, Dominic Fike and The Beaches (to name a few), attendees were treated to an unforgettable experience.
Friday kicked off with a bang as the overcast cloudy skies loomed over the fest, but provided a respite from the usual Alabama heat. The Beaches performing on the beach of Gulf Shores was perfect as the Canadian band was tight and whose infectious jams had many singing along, especially with their recent breakout “Blame, Brett”. Del Water Gap was equally entertaining and demonstrated quality showmanship as he commanded the stage.
Wild crowds ascended and danced, fist-pumped and sang loudly during The Chainsmokers set, which had an incredibly large audience that made it seem like the entire festival was there. Daily Bread was as standout from Friday but it was a given that the main headliner would top everyone, nearly for the entire weekend. Lana Del Rey was a dream as soon as she emerged in her white dress and glittery cowboy boots. It took everyone by surprise that she had not only one but many guests join her on-stage, including Nessa Barrett, Benson Boone, Tommy Genesis and Jelly Roll. Lana was also seen later on during the weekend performing on stage with Megan Moroney and dancing with fellow Hangout performer, Sexxy Red, which proved Lana is truly that friend who can vibe with anyone at the function.
Saturday morning was met with pouring rain and stormy weather that had attendees uncertain about the day’s event. However, the rain and winds stopped in time and clouds to disperse that the set times were only pushed up an hour, while others shifted to Sunday’s lineup. Major standouts included Willow Avalon, whose silky smooth voice and and classic country/pop sounds were so fun to dance and sing along to, especially “Stranger”. There was plenty of people line-dancing to “Austin” and other songs by this year’s country breakout artist, Dasha. Meanwhile, the sets by Alison Wonderland and Disco Lines had incredibly interactive crowds who danced non-stop throughout their time on-stage. Current “it-girl” Chappell Roan exceeded expectations, as Roan had a huge contingent of loud singers expressing themselves throughout her set, especially during “Hot To Go”. Odesza bringing down the house to cap things off was perfect for a day that started out a little shaky with the inclement weather but ended drying up and brought the energy and fireworks.
The last day of the festival brought forth perfect weather as the sun shone throughout the day and warmed up nicely to what attendees were hoping for. Emerging artist, Hemlocke Springs was a fun set and exuded enthusiasm that was infectious as she performed viral songs “girlfriend” and “enknee1”. The same enthusiasm and fun was seen during country rapper Tanner Adell’s set and Renee Rapp was charismatic and entertaining while on-stage, taking time to interact with the audience, acknowledging many that were holding up signs. Exciting country artist Megan Moroney had all the emo girls crying with her breakup songs but kept it light on-stage and had many singing along to her latest single, “Indifferent” as well as the humorous “I’m Not Pretty”.
Even though people we either playing in or jumping over puddles for a couple of days, Hangout attendees took it in stride and were seen in unique outfits throughout the weekend. There was a trend of body paint and drawings on people’s bodies like “if lost return to Zach Bryan”. The lineup was perfect for the beach setting of Gulf Shores and the southern crowd looking for something different yet familiar and made for incredible memories to kick off the summer.
