LIVE REVIEW: Laufey & Grace Enger – Dallas, TX 04/18/2024

Laufey elegantly pirouetted on stage in a golden dress to kick off the second night of her Bewitch: The Goddess Tour in Dallas, TX, on April 18, 2024. The Icelandic-Chinese jazz singer-songwriter has steadily rose to fame since the release of her debut EP Typical of Me (2021), debut album Everything I Know About Love (2022), and sensational songs “From the Start” and “Valentine.” Her second studio album, Bewitched, released on September 8, 2023, under AWAL, is composed of delicate ballads, orchestral arrangements, and Laufey’s timeless, classically trained vocals.

Before her dazzling set began, a chorus of aww’s from the singer and crowd filled the room after a young child shouted “I love you, Laufey!” Opening with “While You Were Sleeping,” “Valentine,” and “Second Best,” the ease of her performance instantly enchanted the loving audience. The 24-year-old seamlessly switched between multiple guitars, piano, and a rich cello solo throughout the show. During brief pauses, she expressed her love for her craft and the audience before joking “Here’s another sad song!” Her impressive jazz vocals and theatrical arrangements never ceased to mesmerize.

Underneath the star-like lights, Laufey showcased her vocal range accompanied by her graceful orchestra. Highlights included the whimsical “Promise”, dazzling angry “Goddess,” and the bossa nova-inspired “Fragile,” which the crowd softly sung along and swayed to in their seats. The singer’s identical twin sister, Junia, came on stage playing the violin as Laufey sung her last song, “From The Start.” Shortly after she twirled off, leaving with Junia and the orchestra. She reappeared alone for her soft, emotional ballad “Letter To My 13 Year Old Self.” Holding onto every word, the crowd of young girls silently passed around tissues and grasped each other’s hands. They broke their silence when Laufey sang, “One day, you’ll be up on stage / Little girls will scream your name,” to passionately yell just that. At the end of this touching performance, Laufey held her hand to her heart and looked fondly before her then finally left the stage.

Supporting the Bewitched: Goddess Tour was fresh singer-songwriter Grace Enger, who has slowly grown to internet fame through her original songs. Her set began with “Me to You,” “The Cut,” and “imytn” from her 2023 debut EP Well Here We Are. After performing these songs acoustically, Enger covered Sixpence None The Richer’s iconic “Kiss Me” which had the young crowd screaming and singing along. Enger’s warm vocals and subtle guitar picking easily captured the crowd’s attention as she sung ballads on navigating heartbreak.
