LA-native musician Jesse Jo Stark is known as a new-age rock ‘n’ roll force among the music industry for her electrifying stage presence and alluring discography. Growing up as the goddaughter of the legendary Cher and being influenced by Elvira, Old Hollywood, and Tim Burton, Stark’s grit and vintage atmosphere were destined for stardom. Stark’s debut album, DOOMED (2022), released under her eponymous label, defies being placed under a single genre rather Stark blends country, rockabilly, punk, and blues. DOOMED kicks off with the distorted, heavily guitar-backed “666 in the suburbs” then dives into various sounds on the sullen “sugar high” and the dark, brooding “slayer”. Earlier this month, Stark released the eerie lullaby “skeleton,” compact with brooding drums and the musician’s honey-like voice. “I’ve never really understood what my genre is and I named it ‘horrific hillbilly’ because I grew up on country and punk.” the singer mentions. “I love horror and all these things, so I kind of made my own genre name and it’s definitely influenced my visuals.”
Jesse Jo Stark spoke with B-Sides host Pete Mar on her tour bus rituals, past Halloween costumes, exploring country music, and more.
