After completing a run of tour dates with Maisie Peters, twenty-two-year-old singer-songwriter Jonah Kagen released his new single “Barcelona” on May 6th. The track contains elements of Jonah’s influences that include a Bossa-nova flare while the lyrics speak to a relationship that didn’t have a chance to blossom. Kagen noted, “this song is for anybody who’s had someone they care about move away. For me it was Barcelona, but I know the idea of wishing someone hadn’t gone to that place and hoping they would just come back is something many people can understand. Maybe listening to “Barcelona” will let you groove your pain away. Who knows. Give it a shot.” Kagen, recently signed to Arista Records, has taken advantage of the exposure he’s gotten when going viral over the pandemic with the song “Broken”, which has generated over 28 million streams to date. With influences ranging from tropical house to classic rock and jazz, Kagen grew up in Savannah, Georgia and took up guitar at the age of six and never looked back. He recently graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and moved to Los Angeles to focus on his music career.
Jonah Kagen spoke with B-Sides about how his first tour with Maisie Peters showed how impactful his music is, how his latest single “Barcelona” came to be and more.
