Parcels sophomore album ‘Day/Night’ was released in November of 2021 to much anticipation and surprised fans with its multi-disc album that consists of nineteen tracks. With 150 demos in play, the band went back to basics to go through the songs and play them live, harkening back to their influences and experiences prior to joining forces. They stated, “The first thing that we did was get into a rehearsal room for three months and learn how to play instruments – it was like instrument boot camp, we’d been touring and playing the songs over and over again and we were becoming rigid; we weren’t having a conversation with our instruments. We came in every day, put on songs that we liked, talked about their different elements and learned how to play them: classic blues, soul, folk, funk, heavy metal.” Highlighted by the singles, “Somethinggreater,” “Free” and “Comingback,” ‘Day/Night’ tackles opposing topics of identity vs anonymity, family vs independence, belonging vs isolation and nostalgia vs projection; the self and the shadow self. The band is currently on their extensive North American and European tour in support of the album and has wowed fans with their energy that’s brought a sense of community amongst the fanbase. The band shared, “It’s been a long two years since we’ve been able to play for crowds. Since then, we’ve started from scratch, traveled to our very core, studying and building our band back up to deliver a show that feels fresh and full of life. When creating Day/Night, we were imagining performing it on stage from the very beginning, arranging it like we would a performance in a theatre. We feel honored to now be able to realize this safely in person with all of you beautiful people at last.”
B-Sides spoke with Louie Swain and Anatole (“Toto”) Serret of Parcels about their feelings on being back performing in front of audiences again, how they took time to focus on the live performance, how their approach to ‘Day/Night’ differed from their first album and more.
