VIDEO: INTERVIEW – Waterparks Talk Honesty in ‘Fandom’, Managing Success

The third full-length and Hopeless Records debut album, ‘Fandom’ by Waterparks was released this past October to much anticipation. The material was created after the band had already spent time on what was supposed to be the album, but not satisfied with the material, songwriter and lead singer Awsten Knight took to Twitter to announce he deleted all the files of the new music. With a new message and wealth of inspiration, Knight stated- “We talked about music culture and fandom culture, how those things affect me, where I am mentally, and even a little bit about those relationships. A lot of the stuff that is more ‘heartbreak’ centered is coming from a more confident place than a self-pitying view. That’s why this is my favorite stuff we’ve done.” Speaking about the change in direction, he continued “I hope audiences experience the record with open minds. It would be easy to repeat ourselves. The older albums are a part of who we are. I want listeners to accept growth and the honest expression of where we’re at now. This is Waterparks.” The trio, comprised of Awsten Knight (vocals, guitar), Geoff Wigington (guitar, vocals), and Otto Wood (drums, vocals), gained a higher profile with their sophomore album, ‘Entertainment’ that charted internationally.

B-Sides spoke with Waterparks about the honesty in ‘Fandom’, managing success, Geoff’s ties to Northern California and more.
