MTV’s Snowglobe 2019 brought out lots of revelers stoked to ring in the new decade in South Lake Tahoe, CA. Weather is always a major topic for this outdoor winter festival and aside from snowfall toward the very end of the first day, Mother Nature cooperated for the three-day event. With a more compact layout this year, it was easy to walk from the main stage to the smaller indoor stage, The Igloo and other outdoor stage, Sierra was a short distance away. Headlined by Skrillex, Zhu and Louis The Child, there were lots of highly anticipated sets from the likes of Doja Cat, Brownies & Lemonade All Stars, GriZ, SG Lewis and JPEGMAFIA. Billed as mystery guest, the surprise performance of the event brought out Deathpact, who made his U.S. debut and whose identity was shrouded in darkness. Fans didn’t care about that as they partied and danced to the set that was filled with heavy tracks from the project’s two EPs.
Starting earlier in the day, the first day was filled with great performances highlighted by Droloe, who mixed things up with original tracks with dub and some trap. Elohim is no stranger to SnowGlobe, having performed many times over the course of the last 4 years and put on an incredible set, even coming out into the crowd to greet fans at one point. SNBRN and Blunts & Blondes were energetic and fed off the crowd’s enthusiasm during their sets. With the manageable temperatures, fans were out in full-force for Whethan and headliner Zhu, who closed out the night.
The second day brought out a lot more people, many of whom got there early to catch killer sets by GG Magree, Brownies & Lemondade All-Stars and Graves. The energy and overall vibe was positive and friendly as there were many groups of people dancing and talking in between sets at various stages and in the MTV Lodge. The set by Doja Cat was overflowing with people in The Igloo and those who were inside were dancing and waving their hands to the beat with phones in their hands to record clips to post. Louis The Child totally brought their A-game for their set that was filled with familiar songs, confetti and energy to close out the night.
New Year’s Eve was filled with sunny skies during the day that made for a clear night to get ready for the fireworks at midnight. Many attendees noted having cell service issues for a portion of the day, as is usually the case with the influx of more people in the Tahoe area. Regardless, there were lots of great sets that had people buzzing, including the engaging Kaivon and SG Lewis. The latter put on a great performance despite having been recently sick. Clozee brought her electronic world-beats and was a perfect intro to the early evening. Vince Staples noted how cold it was but still brought energy and excitement to his set. On the flip-side, JPEGMAFIA were just as energetic and defied the cold by performing shirtless and hyped up the crowd throughout their set. Despite being nearly 20 minutes late, Dominic Fike showed why his fanbase is growing as rapidly as it has. His set was filled with lots of sing-alongs and showed his range with either rapping or singing while playing guitar along with his backing band. The countdown with Skrillex was raucous crowd as he ran a video of other artists wishing the new year well before fireworks were sent into the night sky to ring in 2020.
