At the start of 2019, Kim Petras sold out her first ever headline shows in New York City, Los Angeles, and Melbourne before headlining Sydney Mardi Gras. The demand to see her perform live would continue in subsequent tours, as her summer Broken Tour sold out during presale prompting many of the performances to move to larger venues. Currently on tour in support of her recently released debut, Clarity, Petras shows no signs of slowing down to satiate her fans. Ahead of Halloween, Petras released Turn Off The Light Vol. 2 on October 1, the sequel to her critically-acclaimed, Halloween-inspired mixtape released last year. The German pop singer/songwriter Kim Petras relocated to Los Angeles at 19 with the money she saved from waitressing to pursue a career in music. While honing her skills as a songwriter, Petras took on projects like writing jingles and landed writing credit for a song on the soundtrack for the 2007 live-action movie Bratz. ” My music comes first then touring,” mentioned Petras. Her friendship with Charli XCX, Paris Hilton, Fergie, Lizzo, and Max has helped give her additional exposure and a growing fanbase. ” I have amazing fans here [San Francisco Bay Area]. The tour keeps on growing. This year is our third tour and each time I become a better performer. It’s a process.” Working long hours in the studio, Petras poured her experiences within writing her albums. “I went through a tough break-up, but I’ve become stronger out of it…The beautiful thing about music is making people feel like that they’re not alone.” Petras continues with a flurry of activity, with the recent release of her collaboration with ALMA, Kash Doll and Stefan Don on the song, “How It’s Done” for the Charlie’s Angels soundtrack and will wrap up the North American leg of The Clarity Tour in early December before continuing the tour in Europe at the beginning of January.
Petras spoke with B-Sides at the Fox Theater in Oakland, CA about her debut album, performing in front of her parents for the first time, her love of Halloween, Danny Elfman and more. Check out the interview:
