The highly anticipated West Coast show dates for slowthai finally arrived with September. The English rapper has a growing fanbase after having released his debut album, Nothing Great About Britain earlier this year and was promptly nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize for UK Album of the Year. Awards or not, the audience in San Francisco was prepared for his engaging stage show that accompanied his critically acclaimed work.
The sold-out show at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco was in a frenzy as soon as the music started and slowthai (born Tyron Frampton) hit the stage. Dressed in a track jacket and jeans to start, slowthai ripped through songs from his debut including “Drug Dealer”, “Gorgeous” and “Grow Up”. The crowd became even more raucous when slowthai brought up a female guest to perform “Inglorious” mid-set with him. Eventually going shirtless, slowthai encouraged mosh pits to form multiple times throughout the set and was accompanied by a mascot dressed in a rabbit costume dancing on-stage that helped start a huge circle pit before “Doorman”.
Requesting the sound to be increased a few times throughout the set, it wasn’t loud enough for slowthai and based on the crowd reaction, it would never have been loud enough for them anyway. Rapping along vociferously, moshing and dancing throughout the set, the audience gave the energy slowthai to feed off of to put on a memorable debut in San Francisco that was solid throughout and could’ve easily gone longer, a good sign for the new artist.
