Singer/songwriter Freya Ridings has seen her profile grow exponentially in 2018, as her breakout single “Lost Without You” has garnered over 25 million streams thanks to the song’s use in the British reality TV show, Love Island. The London-based artist just finished recording her debut album that slated for release in Spring 2019, but has released a handful of singles thus-far, including the aforementioned “Lost Without You,” “Blackout,” and her impressive cover of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ classic “Maps.” Ridings has already performed at high-profile festivals, including Lollapalooza, Outside Lands and will be at Austin City Limits later this year. Contending with being incredibly shy and feeling isolated at school, Freya found her extraordinary, vibrato-rich, pin-drop voice when she was in her 7th year at school and invited to perform at an open-mic night. She stated, “I sang quite low for a little girl, I did this whole raspy thing. Suddenly, though, I’d found my own way. To this day, I still can’t believe I got up there. The whole room went crazy and that was the moment where I thought, maybe I can take this thing that’s my own private thing, that I’ve done on my own, and actually share it with other people.”
B-Sides met up with Freya Ridings at Outside Lands 2018 to talk about her festival appearance, her admiration for Florence Welch (who also played the festival), her debut album and more. Check out the interview:
