Up-and-coming artist, Au/Ra, is already well-traveled and has only recently turned 16 years old. Born in Ibiza to parents who are both in the music industry(her father is an electronic/trance producer and mother singer/songwriter), Au/Ra moved to Antigua with her family when she was five years old. It wouldn’t take long for Au/Ra to embark down her own path into music, first starting out with covers ranging from songs by Lorde and Pink to Taylor Swift and others. Her debut EP, Outsiders, was released in late 2017 and features the tracks “Concrete Jungle” and “Kicks”, which have garnered over 20 million combined streams worldwide. Her latest single, “Panic Room” has gotten critical acclaim and has gotten the remix treatment from the production duo of CamelPhat. Delving into “Panic Room”, Au/Ra explained that “it’s probably the darkest song I’ve written. It’s about something I don’t feel like a lot of songs talk about, which is anxiety. “Panic Room,” to its very core, is about battling self-doubt and fear, and how sometimes you can be your biggest enemy.”
During a recent limited run of North American tour dates, B-Sides caught up with Au/Ra at her San Francisco debut show to talk about her growing profile with “Panic Room”, the different ways how each of her parents influence her music and more. Check out the interview:
