The name Lil Dicky has taken the music industry by storm and managed to gather millions upon millions of views within his short two-year career. David Burd, AKA Lil Dicky is an American rapper from Philadelphia who first got noticed with his widely successful music video “Ex-Boyfriend” in 2013. The video received over 1 million views in the first day and currently has over 12 million views. Almost all of his music videos have over a million views and multiple videos are in the 10 million range, so it’s safe to say that Lil Dicky is becoming a star.
Dicky combines quality rap flows and songs with hilarious comedy and satire that is extremely relatable, especially to the college-aged guy. On the song “Classic Male Pregame”, Dicky rhymes about a classic night in which he and three friends pregame at home before going out and actually end up just getting drunk at their house and talking about going out. It’s these type of normal life occurrences that Dicky finds the relatability in comedy and truly strikes gold. His videos are all extremely well-made and his creativity is constantly flowing with original ideas. His latest music video, “$ave Dat Money” features the likes of Rich Homie Quan and Fetty Wap, as well as cameos by Kevin Durant, Mark Cuban, and Sarah Silverman. The video featured Dicky asking permission from everyday people to use their mansions or boats and cars and manages to get some epic rap video footage in the quest to make the greatest rap video ever, without spending any money at all. A 20 minute documentary was released shortly after the video that goes more into detail on how Dicky manages to convince these people and their reactions to the obscure question.
Lil Dicky is not what you think about when you think about modern day rap, however, he is definitely making his place in the industry. With features from huge stars like Snoop Dogg and Fetty Wap and even a Sway in the morning apperance, it seems that this comedy writer wants to truly make a passion out of rapping. His debut album Professional Rapper was released on July 31, 2015 and was well received by fans. Whether you’re a fan of rap or a fan of comedy almost anyone can find some entertainment in Lil Dicky and his appeal has a large audience.
