The Top 12 Must-See Female Artists at SXSW

Are you ready?
Are you ready?

Planning on going to South by Southwest this year?  Make sure to add these lovely ladies to your agenda.

1. Courtney Barnett

Australian singer and guitarist,  Barnett caught the audiences ears with her witty and humorous lyrics.  I recommend her because not only are her lyrics catchy but you’ll find your body swaying to the beat involuntarily.

2. Girlpool

This dynamic duo collaborated in 2014. They left there previous bands to form Girlpool because of the low number of female bands. These indie rockers will knock you off your feet with their style of guitar playing and vocals.

Girlpool - Ideal World (live)

3. SZA

Solana Rowe, native of St . Louis, Missouri is an alternative R and B singer.  I had the pleasure of seeing her perform at Fun, Fun, Fun fest this past year and let me tell you,  she puts on an amazing show. Not only is she full of energy, but you can feel her emotions through her voice as she spits out her lyrics.

4. Amber London

Houston Texas native, London is one to watch out for. Her lyrics and demeanor is what has her on watch.  She gives Screwston a reason to stay on the map.

5. Marie Davidson

Hailing from Montreal,  her monotone storytelling songs will have you memorized and wanting more. Davidson will have you wondering why you haven’t heard of her before.

6. Megan Lane

Best known for her wicked guitar skills, Lane is one performer you do not want to miss. She’s also known as a multi instrumentalist, so don’t be surprised when you see her jump from guitar to drums in one set.

Megan Lane - Coyote/Wolf

7. Irene Diaz

Her smooth soulful sound plus the strumming of the ukulele from her partner Carolyn, will have you coming back for more. Her vocals will leave you weak at the knees.

Irene Diaz - Anything For You (Live at KPFT 90.1)

8. Dead Sara

Originally the band started off with lead vocalist, Emily Armstrong and guitarist Siouxie Medley.  They then collaborated with two other fellows and Dead Sara was the outcome.  Armstrong leads the band with her raspy vocals and her intense vibe.  The original duo is one to watch out for.

9. Call me Lolla

Brazilian band led by Brenda Mayer.  Their sound is definitely unique.  They use a variety of instruments and you really fall in love with sounds you’ve never heard before.  I can’t really explain her voice,  it’s soft, yet subtle and soothing all at the same time.

10. Jenn Grant

Jenn Grant has definitely shown us the great side of Canada.  She’s known for her stage performance and her intoxicating voice,  you do not want to miss her.

No One's Gonna Love You (Quite Like I Do)

11. Marina and the Diamonds

Marina Diamondus has her own genre of music.  It’s a collaboration of soul and pop with a bit of EDM in the mix. If you check out her stuff on YouTube, you’ll see why I recommend her.

12. Alvvays

Prounounced “always”, I thought I’d throw  another Canadian based band in the mix. Molly Rankin, lead vocalist, grew up in the music industry. She’s following in her father’s footsteps. Still up and coming,  she stands out of the crowd with her unique sound.
