Another day, another “Best of” list. We forewarned you with the last post about the bevy of best of lists you’d be seeing in the next few weeks. Here’s my favorite movies of the year!
Birdman – Micheal Keaton’s meta return to the big screen was a mind-blowing experience to say the least. The relentlessness of the cinematography, mixed with the incredible performances, and engaging story, made this the must see movie of the year.
Gone Girl – M. Night Shyamalan never did twists this good. The story is incredibly bleak but, still manages to make you laugh. Fincher, Affleck, and even Tyler Perry bring their A game for one of the best movies of the year.
Nightcrawler – Jake Gyllenhaal continues to prove he’s a force to be reckoned with, with a truly incredible, and disturbing performance. The movie serves as a great commentary on America’s fascination with tragedy, while kind of exploiting it in the same way, which was probably it’s intention to begin with.
Boyhood – Surely one of the most impressive films of all time, just in terms of the scope of the project. Richard Linklater filmed the movie over the course of twelve years, and the result is the ultimate coming of age story. Bonus: The Black Album is a real thing(thanks, Ethan Hawke.)
Grand Budapest Hotel – Wes Anderson can do no wrong in my book. Even the guy’s worst movies are still some of the most visually stimulating nowadays. The auteur may have his magnum opus here, a relentlessly engaging blend of his dollhouse aesthetic and quirky characters.
