Editors Pick: Best Singles of 2014

the-bestAnother year, another slew of best of lists. The amount of lists can be a little overwhelming but, they’re a great way to find new music you might have missed, or not given the time of day throughout the year. Here’s my picks for the songs I just couldn’t stop listening to in 2014.

RunTheJewelsRTJ2Love AgainRun The Jewels – Killer Mike and El-P fill their two verses with slick, incredibly funny brand of lyricism, but it’s Gangsta Boo’s flip on the way women are typically spoken about in hip-hop that ensures this songs spot on the list. Plus, that beat. Goddamn.

Run The Jewels - Love Again

Taylor_Swift_-_1989

StyleTaylor Swift – It’s hard to pick a single song off T-Swift’s latest masterpiece but, this one really sticks out for me. The lyrics and song itself perfectly blend together in a song that would’ve sounded just as comfortable on the radio thirty years ago as it does today.

Taylor Swift - Style

Someone NewHozier –  A hauntingly beautiful pop-soul song, that perfectly represents the irish crooners fresh sound. The song could be the quintessential anthem to the hook-up movement of the current generation.

71eyvV+yXjL._SL1400_It Was Always YouMaroon 5 – Say what you want about Adam Levine and co., but they know how to write a solid ass pop song. Their newest album is stuffed with hooks and this song about finding love that was under your nose the whole time stands to be one of their catchiest songs to date. Not air drumming right before the chorus is borderline impossible.

279961-empBig CheeseBayside – One of the most consistent bands in pop-punk nowadays, Bayside opened their  6th full length album with a banger. The opening drum beat will get stuck in your head for days, and the song never lets up from the moment you hear the bass kick.

Bayside - Big Cheese

Jack_White_-_LazarettoHigh Ball StepperJack White – White has proved again and again he’s the modern day king of the guitar riff so, it’s no surprise the best song off his newest effort is an instrumental. Who was the last rock artist to put out an instrumental as a lead single?

Jack White - "High Ball Stepper" (Lazaretto Album Track)

Meghan_Trainor_Title_EP_Album_CoverDear Future HusbandMeghan Trainor – If the songs released so far are any indicator, Trainor aims to have one of the best pop albums of 2015. Showcasing a perfect blend of the classic pop and Motown soul sounds of old, with a more modern array of sounds, it’s like Adele and Arethra meet Nicki Minaj.

Meghan Trainor - Dear Future Husband (Official Audio)

rentedworldI Don’t Want To Be an Asshole AnymoreThe Menzingers – The Menzingers killed 2012 with “On The Impossible Past,” and continued on that path with this years “Rented World.” Not only is this song perfect, the video is one of the best ones I’ve seen in quite some time.

The Menzingers - "I Don't Wanna Be An Asshole Anymore"

a0568906257_10Your Deep Rest The Hotelier – The Hotelier changed their name… sort of, and with the name change came a great deal of maturity. Another album that was hard to play favorites with, the lyrics to this song are incredibly relatable, and heartbreakingly so.

The Hotelier - Your Deep Rest

meta-image-2Out Of The Black Royal Blood – Even Dave Grohl couldn’t ignore the hype behind these guys, seeing as how they’re opening for the Foo on their stadium summer tour next year. The drums on this song, the bass(yea, that’s a bass, crazy right?) Open your arms and embrace the next big thing in rock n’ roll.
