Zilker Park in Austin, TX transformed into a musical wonderland as the first weekend of Austin City Limits 2014 commenced on Friday October 3, 2014. Headliners Outkast and Beck led the first day’s lineup that included standouts, Sam Smith, Foster The People, CHVRCHES, St. Vincent and others. After a rough start at their first appearance at Coachella earlier this year, the legendary artists put on a polished set showcasing their immense catalog of work highlighted by “Bombs Over Baghdad”, “So Fresh So Clean” and the venerable “Ms. Jackson”. The weather was closer to fall temperatures as it cooled down during the night while Beck performed a strong set, starting with classics “Devil’s Haircut” and “Loser” and was like a locomotive gathering steam as the veteran performer was quite energetic and never slowed down. Foster The People played the hits that the crowd was expecting but with the sun setting directly into their eyes and stage, the band did their best to put on a great show. Sam Smith in the meantime, didn’t have such issues and had the most diverse crowd of the day that reflected more of an “American Idol” audience with both teenagers and grandparents checking out the British crooner.
