The Summer X Games 2014 began its inaugural run in Austin, TX with world class athletes in the disciplines of skateboard, BMX, motocross and rally car. The event’s first day was ushered in by the vert competitions in downtown Austin in front of the state capital and numerous events at the Circuit of Americas. Thursday’s competitions kicked off with the BMX Vert and Skateboard Vert with the latter showcasing veterans Bucky Lasek, Pierre-Luc Gagnon, Andy McDonald dueling it out with the likes of the younger Mitchie Brusco, 17, Jimmy Wilkins, 20 and Tom Schaar, 14. Wilkins would eventually win gold to become the youngest gold medal winner in the competition since Shaun White.
BMX Vert was highlighted by a very decisive victory for the ninth time by skilled BMX rider, Jamie Bestwick. At 42, Bestwick took the gold over fellow veterans Simon Tabron, 40, and Dennis McCoy, who at 47 years old has been consistently the oldest competitor at X Games in recent years.
