ALBUM REVIEW: Lightning Bolt by Pearl Jam

pearl jamAlthough some consider Pearl Jam as one of the pioneering bands of the nineties grunge movement, their latest album Lightning Bolt seems more mediocre than unique. The album was released on October 11th, 2013, and is a continuation of Pearl Jam’s usual hard rock style, it does not really stand out or capture one’s attention. Everything from the instrumentation, vocals, and music itself sounds like a very generic rock band. The album is versatile on topics such as heartbreak in “Sleeping By Myself” and new love in “Future Days.” It also talks about family in “My Father’s Son” and the band’s love for music in “Let The Records Play.” However, the lyrics lack depth, such as in the song “Let The Records Play,” with lyrics “Breaking, forsaken, What’s your taking? Bleeding the feeling, he lets the records play.” Overall, the album sounds manufactured rather than genuine. Lightning Bolt is currently available for streaming on iTunes and Spotify.
