Day three of the first weekend of the Austin City Limits Music Festival was just as energetic as the first two days. Highlighted by headliners, Atoms of Peace and Lionel Richie, music fans got a strong lineup of younger bands MS MR, Grouplove, Foxygen and Tame Impala. Festival stalwarts, Phoenix, Franz Ferdinand and The National drew strong crowds, especially Phoenix, whose audience swelled early through the French band’s set. The band also experienced a power outage, similar to what occurred with Muse on Friday. The outage occurred in the midst of a rousing revival of “Entertainment” towards the end of the set, but the band kept playing until power was restored.
Atoms of Peace, led by Thom Yorke and Flea, put on a stellar performance for an enthusiastic, yet, laid-back crowd. Relying only on a varying light show, Yorke and co. looked very relaxed and comfortable as if they were just jamming in a rehearsal space. On the other side, Lionel Richie pulled out all the stops with an array of pop hits ranging from his days with the Commodores to his historic composition he wrote with Michael Jackson, “We Are The World.” Richie’s set was highlighted by the monster hits of his solo career, “Hello”, “All Night Long”, as well as, “Let’s Groove Tonight” and “Lady (You Bring Me Up)” from his Commodores days that had a crowd of both families and young hipsters dancing throughout the set.
