Video Style: Lorde- “Royals”

16-year-old Lorde’s video for “Royals” received more than 100,000 hits within 24 hours of being posted in New Zealand in May, and is still drumming up popularity in the U.S. The New Zealand native signed a development deal with Universal Records at the age of 12 and has spent the past four years working on her first EP, The Love Club.

In an already haunting and cinematic video, Lorde makes a brief appearance in “Royals”–uncharacteristic of many U.S. pop stars. The video, and the song itself, are minimalistic and simple but in the most intriguing way. The glimpse of her style we can grab from the scenes are all clean, uncomplicated and effortless.

The shots of her are mostly from the waist up but she layers a leaf-shaped, gold statement necklace over a white t-shirt with rolled sleeves. This tee from ASOS has a zipper on the back and is also color-blocked plus clasp on this inexpensive Forever 21 “pixelated triangle” statement necklace for additional detail.

Lorde’s other accessory is her gorgeous head of hair which, again, plays into her natural look and vibe. I’m a fan of Bumble & Bumble’s Surf Spray which Sephora has in a bite-sized, inexpensive version to use when your hair is still damp. You can recreate Lorde’s liquid liner makeup with Sephora Collection’s high precision brushin a jet black.

I like that Lorde debuted by steering away from the glitz & glam to set her song to a storyline and to give a sneak peek into what we can expect from her. Check it out below.
