As per the California State Assembly and the Surfrider Foundation, today Wednesday, June 20 is International Surfing Day. Stating in a press release, Assmebly member Das Williams said, “I’d wake up, go surfing to start the day, take my shower at the beach showers and then step into society. At that time in my life is when I began to see the beach and our beautiful coastline as the great equalizer in the community – we can all enjoy it. That helped sure up my passion to fight to protect that equalizer.”
Kelly Slater and Steph Gilmore are this years ISD Ambassadors and will be updating Facebook and Twitter with updates and how to help out. Slater stated, “International Surfing Day is a day to take some time to appreciate this wonderful world we have and this incredible relationship we each have with the ocean.”
Events all over the world will be taking place from Australia and Playa de Las Americas, to Hawaii and Santa Cruz, CA.
Also to acknowledge the day, Surfrider will be streaming its Web-a-thon as hosted by Chris Cote and Susan Holmes McKagen running a membership drive with rewarding prize packages. Similar to the old telethons on television, entertainment will be showcased in the form of performances by Japanther and Fishbone.
