ALBUM REVIEW: Southern Air by Yellowcard

Any pop-punk fan in their right mind had a copy of Yellowcard’s Ocean Avenue and played it on repeat mercilessly back in 2003. Since then Yellowcard have been putting out versions of Ocean Avenue and fans are still eating it up. The band just dropped their latest album Southern Air and while the album may not bring anything new to the table, when you find what works why change it?

The standout single from the album is “Here I Am Alive” featuring Tay Jardine from We Are The In Crowd, with whom Yellowcard will be touring with in the fall. The song gives the inspirational middle-finger to anyone who said that dreams don’t come true, i.e. that a small-town boy couldn’t beats the odds and accomplish his dreams of becoming a part of a successful rock band.

“Awakening” “Surface of the Sun”, “Rivertown Blues” and “Southern Air” follow Yellowcard-signature summer anthem structure with charging guitars intertwined with violin strains. “A Vicious Kind” and “Sleep In The Snow” are as angry as Yellowcard gets, the wounded strains of the violin matching the sting of the heartbreak in the lyrics frontman Ryan Key belts out so emphatically. Fellow pop-punkers Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low and Cassadee Pope of Hey Monday join the band on “Telescope”, a heartfelt love song that borderlines cliché. “Ten” exploits nostalgia to the full-extent with bittersweet reflections of the past.

Southern Air is now available for purchase on iTunes and for streaming on spotify. Catch Yellowcard on tour with The Wonder Years and We Are the In Crowd this fall.
