The co-founder and keyboardist of the legendary British hard-rock band, Deep Purple, Jon Lord died Monday at the age of 71 after suffering a pulmonary embolism. During the late 60s through the 70s, Lord and Deep Purple created the foundation for popular heavy metal music with classic tracks “Smoke On The Water” and “Child In Time.” Classically trained, Lord studied classical piano as a child and continued honing his craft as evidenced in his famous large-scale piece, “Concerto For Group And Orchestra,” which was recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and first performed at Royal Albert Hall with Deep Purple.
