Has SXSW Lost Its Touch?

Recently McDonald's has been in the news and this time it's not concerning their food. The billion dollar corporation asked Ex Cops, an indie band, to perform for free at South by Southwest  (SXSW) this year. SXSW is a music festival held in Austin, TX and started in 1987. The festivals original main goal was to help promote local musicians and make them known throughout the United States. Since then the festival has grown substantially, starting off with only 700 acts in 1987 to over 2,000 today. 11010

Coachella 2015: Thoughts and Recommendations

Another year, another Coachella. The line-up for the 2015 edition of the ever popular, ever famous Indio, California music festival was just released, and it's a pretty mixed bag. The headliners aren't quite as shocking or hot as last years reunited Outkast, or Arcade Fire but, there's still plenty to be excited for. Drake is still one of the biggest MC's in hip-hop, and for a reason. Jack White's live show is notoriously awesome. AC/DC might be old but, they're a band you'll definitely be bragging about seeing before you, or they, die. That being said, some of the most

PHOTO HIGHLIGHTS: Austin City Limits 2014 Weekend One Day Three

The third and final day of the first weekend installment of Austin City Limits 2014 brought the heat back to Zilker Park. Temperatures were warmest out of the three days of the festival With headliners Pearl Jam decidedly drawing an older crowd than Calvin Harris, the lineup was just as strong as the previous days. Eddie Vedder was in fine form, as the seminal grunge rock band ran through a nearly 30-song set starting with “Long Road” and ran through a mix of alternative rock radio staples “Corduroy”, “Evenflow” as well as their cover of the John Lennon track, "Imagine",

PHOTO REVIEW: Austin City Limits 2014 Day One

Zilker Park in Austin, TX transformed into a musical wonderland as the first weekend of Austin City Limits 2014 commenced on Friday October 3, 2014. Headliners Outkast and Beck led the first day's lineup that included standouts, Sam Smith, Foster The People, CHVRCHES, St. Vincent and others. After a rough start at their first appearance at Coachella earlier this year, the legendary artists put on a polished set showcasing their immense catalog of work highlighted by "Bombs Over Baghdad", "So Fresh So Clean" and the venerable "Ms. Jackson". The weather was closer to fall temperatures as it

A Day-by-Day Play for Austin City Limits from a Native Austinite

When it comes to Austin City Limits, I am no rookie. And although this no longer is my first (or 4th, 5th, or 6th) rodeo, there will be thousands of music junkies entering Austin as festival virgins.  It’s a fantastic weekend for the city; days and nights filled to the brim with music, arts, food, culture, and fun. Whether you’re a newbie or returning for another year, as a local I’m here to help you create a day-by-day play for what to expect at this year’s festival. 10010

The 4th annual Boston Calling Festival came to a close last night, and even though things didn't go as smoothly as possible, it was still one for the books. The festival seems to have found its rhythm, following a pacing similar to the spring edition of the festival B-Sides covered this past May. 9928

Outside Lands 2014 Review + Photos

There were many standouts at the sold-out Outside Lands 2014 at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco this past weekend. This year’s lineup was led by headliners Kanye West, The Killers and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, who were surrounded by strong talent including Arctic Monkeys, Disclosure, Death Cab for Cutie, Macklemore and more. Kanye West drew mixed reviews as “Yeezy” performed a similar set to previous outings this year. West alternated performing in a mask covering his entire face and without as he started with “Black Skinhead” and powered through setlist staples, “Stronger” and “Heartless”.

Recap: Lollapalooza 2014

Another year, another Lollapalooza in the bag. This year bore the usual draw of some of the biggest names in music, and left nothing to be desired in the way of a diverse lineup. The weekend was full of incredible performances that we could go on about forever, but instead we'll just give you the highlights. 9725

PREVIEW: Lollapalooza 2014

This coming weekend marks the 23rd year anniversary of Lollapalooza. What started as an annual tour conceptualized by Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell has evolved into one of the most well known music festivals in America. The tour has featured some of the biggest names in music over the past twenty years, including such acts as The Beastie Boys, Foo Fighters, Rage Against the Machine, and a slew other alternative music juggernauts. Preview: Pitchfork Music Festival

Pitchfork is well know for reviewing music, but this weekend the famous music site is throwing it's own festival at Union Park in Chicago. The site is known for being pretty harsh in it's rating of artists, so you know they were selective with the artists they picked to play the weekend long gig. Here's a list of the artists you really shouldn't miss. Kendrick Lamar - It's no surprise that Kendrick is closing out the weekend with a headlining slot. Compton's hometown hero quickly went from being relatively unknow, to blowing up nationwide, very quickly. He recently supported Kanye on

Diary From Firefly Music Festival Pt. 2

After the wildly successful first installment of my diary from a music festival I've returned to finish the story. The people are clamoring to find out what it is really like to go to one of these modern Woodstocks. When we last left off I was still settling in at Firefly. After the end of the second day I was exhausted but excited. There was much more to explore in the dusty landscape. Outkast and Jack Johnson were in my future, after all. My journey wasn't even half way over, and things only got better as time went on. 9588

Diary From Firefly Music Festival Pt. 1

500,000 people went to Woodstock in 1969. That sounds horrific. Last weekend I went to Dover Delaware's own Firefly Music Festival, there were fewer than 80 thousand and I felt like I was being punished for all of the freedom I've ever had in my life. Lack of elbow room aside, I believe that music festivals have something for everyone. There's great bands, lots to do, delicious food, and interesting people. There is no one alive that could go to music festival and find themselves bored at any point during the festivities. 9561

Music Artists At The 2014 X Games

XGames is a sporting event unlike any other. While we have the World Series in baseball and the Super Bowl of football, X Games is the extreme sport equivalent. And just like any other major sporting event, music will surely be involved as well. For the first time in thirteen years, X Games will be hosted in a new home other than Los Angeles. This year's competitions will be held in Austin, Texas June 5-8 and the inaugural event is featuring a host of acts simultaneous to the competition and into the night with well known artists ranging from

REVIEW: Boston Calling- Spring 2014

Memorial Day weekend started off with a bang in Boston this weekend, as the Boston Calling Music Festival kicked off it's third talent-stacked event in only a year's time. The weather forecast threatened to literally rain on everyone's parade, but mother nature was kind enough to spare everyone for most of the weekend. While people did get soaked during The Decemberists' killer set, it didn't slow the fans or the band down, and turned out to be the only performance that literally brought the thunder. (Okay, so there was no thunder, but it did rain a whole lot during their

SXSW 2014: Final Thoughts

Now that SXSW is over and everyone has had time to recover, let us take some time out to really reflect on the momentous week of music we just experienced. This year was no let down to years previous; this year was in fact one of the best years in SXSW music so far. Yes of course there were big names around every corner such as Lady Gaga and Kanye West but, to be honest, how many people actually got to see them? 8068

PHOTOS: SXSW 2014 Highlights

Another year of  SXSW wrapped this weekend, showing locals and tourists why Austin is Live Music Capital of the World. From secret DJ sets to main venues packed to capacity, there was something for every pair of ears in the city. There was free food and booze as far the eye can see; celebrities scattered within the thousands of music fans throughout every crowd; bright visuals and loud sound that impressed all who saw and heard; late nights followed with booze-filled brunches and snacks from food trailers in between. And when the party goes on for 10 straight days, it's

SXSW 2014 March 15th Review

Saturday seemed to come impossibly fast, as SXSW comes to its ending weekend. Thousands of people roamed the streets looking for their favorite bands to see one last time before the return to normalcy hit them back into reality. While, some were bleary-eyed and almost thankful this week was almost over, many came with a renewed energy to end the week with a bang. Some even took it a little to far.  7981

SXSW 2014 March 14th Review

Friday at SXSW proved itself to be crazy. As more and more people showed up for the weekend the crowds grew even more. PHOTOS: Treasure Island Music Festival 2013

The 2013 installment of the Treasure Island Music Festival showcased many up-and-coming artists alongside headliners Atoms for Peace and Beck.  As has been the case in previous years, the weather fluctuations dictated the crowd response.  Warmer temperatures marked the first day with enthusiastic crowds for Disclosure and Major Lazer.  However, as night began to fall, so did temperatures and the crowds started to dissipate.  So much so, that the audience for Atoms for Peace began to dwindle mid-set and the supergroup was left performing their encore to a few thousand people.  Thom Yorke commented on the weather throughout the set,

Highlighted by headliners, Atoms of Peace and Lionel Richie, music fans got a strong lineup of younger bands MS MR, Grouplove, Foxygen and Tame Impala. Festival stalwarts, Phoenix, Franz Ferdinand and The National drew strong crowds, especially Phoenix, whose audience swelled early through the French band's set. PHOTO HIGHLIGHTS: Austin City Limits 2013- Day Two

The second day of the Austin City Limits Music Festival was highlighted by the diverse sounds and weather that had the crowd fanning themselves during the day and bundling up at night. Headliners, The Cure gave a solid performance as lead singer, Robert Smith was animated and vocally strong. Not one for a lot of stage banter, Smith and co. let the music speak for itself, performing twenty six songs to a crowd that had skewed older but was also filled with some of Kendrick Lamar's audience. Lamar, the only rapper at the festival, had performed before the goth-rock headliners to

PHOTO HIGHLIGHTS: Austin City Limits 2013- Day One

Austin City Limits Music Festival 2013 has begun and the lineup of the first day performers did not disappoint. Vampire Weekend, Arctic Monkeys and Queens of the Stone Age turned in raucous performances that built up the energy of the night leading into headliners Depeche Mode and Muse. The latter exceeded the 10pm end time that was listed and continued performing until the sound cut off due to a broken generator. The band left the stage and a disappointed crowd started to slowly disperse until bassist Chris Wolstenholme returned to the stage to start "Knights of Cydonia",
